Benchmarks such as the PHP / GCC / ICC Benchmark I posted quite a while ago on this blog are synthetic. They test "raw bytecode execution" speed that cannot be translated into real-world situations per se.
Flickr recently migrated from PHP 4 to PHP 5. And here are their real world numbers:

Wow.
I am looking forward to John Allspaw's slides from his presentation on "operational efficiency hacks" that he will be giving at next week's Web2.0 Expo.

I am in the process of moving all my photos out of
Gallery into
Flickr.
While the idea of having
your photos on your website is nice and Gallery is probably the best tool for this, I have to say that I enjoy working with Flickr so much more.
Sets,
Tags, and the
Calendar as well as the fact that you can add one photo to multiple sets (and tags, of course) allows for multi-dimensional metadata (that is also meshed with that of other users!), results in a better browsing experience, and invites to
explore other people's photos.

I am off to
Frankfurt for the
International PHP Conference 2005 where I'll be giving a
full-day tutorial on
PHPUnit tomorrow and a
presentation on
Propel on Wednesday.
Together with Aaron,
Christopher,
Derick,
Ilia, and
Zak I will be a coach for the "PHP Lounge", an event described as a place "
where attendees can hack with other conference attendees, talk about current projects, and discuss and solve their development problems in a relaxed atmosphere."
I'll be sharing
my photos at
Flickr. There is a
Flickr group for photos from the International PHP Conference 2005, the Flickr tag for photos from the International PHP Conference 2005 is "
International PHP Conference 2005".

I am off to
Amsterdam for the
EuroOSCON conference where I'll be giving a presentation titled "PHP 5 - The Year After". The presentation will give an overview on
PHP's history, its development and future and showcase the advancements in
PHP 5 using the
PHPUnit2,
Phing,
Propel, and
Agavi projects as examples.
In addition to uploading them to my
gallery I'll be sharing my photos at
Flickr. There is a
Flickr group for EuroOSCON photos, the Flickr tag for EuroOSCON photos is
EuroOSCON.
